Methods of On Page Optimisation
ON PAGE OPTIMISATION
Whenever we set up a website , it is important that the search engine picks up our site when content related to the site is searched up and the site is visible in a user's search query. Usually it lies in the hands of the website owner who makes changes accordingly- which is known as on page seo.
On Page SEO is a practice of optimising the websites to raise the ranking and increase the site traffic. Many methods underwent for this purpose falls under on page seo - which will
be discussed briefly in this blog.
The title should be focused on the 'keyword', making a meaningful sentence revolving it. It shouldn't be fully comprised of capital or small letters as it may fiddle with the character size- a combination of both is preferred. There is a character limitation of 55 to 60 characters and the pixel width limit is 512.
Whenever we search keywords, the webpages are shown in the form of snippets. A snippet consists of URL, title , description and icon. We can leave the seo page title empty but it will not get authorised by Google. According to the SEO starter guide released by the aforementioned company, more than 3 words are necessary in the title.
It is a HTML tag which provides the summary of a webpage. It is one of the main factors contributing to interaction on the site.
For example, when we search a keyword and our site is located at the 3rd position in the results, the impressions and clicks by other users depend on the description. Higher the rank , the more impressions you are likely to get. Sometimes we might get impressions but not clicks. Adding specific keywords like 'sales/discounts' will definitely help in getting them.
meta name "description"
content="____" (pixel width limit: 1024)
Only focusing on the keyword and making it bold doesn't contribute to the site ranking. The site will 'rank' but adding a paragraph which puts it's limelight on 2-3 focus words right under the title helps with higher ranking. It is also necessary to bolden the keywords as the customer's get attracted to bold words first, helping them understand the site's contents.
The webpages should also be user friendly to increase site ranking. It is also advised to start the sentence with a focused keyword. This brings attention to the old school seo practice of keyword density. By definition, it is the percentage of times a word has been repeated in a webpage. ( If a word has been repeated 5 times in 100 words, it's keyword density is 5%)
The reason why keyword density was a hot topic was because of the myths surrounding it's usage in on page optimisation. Later on , it got debunked in a session by Google itself. To one of the questions in the session "Does Google consider keyword density?", the official replied in negative , affirming how Google doesn't consider the old school practice. They also added that if the keyword isn't repeated sufficiently , the chances of higher ranking will be low.
Image files uploaded in the pages are to be named relevant to the contents of the file. Images can be used to increase page ranking by:
- File name- it is preferred to name it accordingly to the content specified.
- Alt name- The Alt name should be the same as the given file name. ( <IMG SRC="filename"> )
- The contents published under the name of the image.
Anchor tag is commonly used for hyperlinks (used to add another site link to our site). Any word or phrase written in between the tags <A> and </A> when clicked upon , will bring the user to a different section of the same website or to a completely different one. The tag helps with the crawling process.
It should be noted that we shouldn't use the focusing keyword of our website in the hyperlink. ( <A> is commonly used as a recommendation link, so using our keyword in it doesn't help us but will advantage the site whose link we have used as a hyperlink)
<H1> tag gives the SEO title in snippet. It shouldn't have more than 10 words. <H2> though mostly used for subheading can also be referred as the title if the title is improper or if <H1> tag is empty.<H3> tag is also used for subheading. While typing in <H2> and <H3> tags , note that the subtitle should be relevant to the content written.
